Wittmeyer Conference Room. 2490 Carmack Road, Columbus, Ohio

In accordance with university guidelines, all participants should be vaccinated and wear a mask. Masks will be available if needed.

Topics to be covered:

  • An overview of beekeeping from the beginning to now.
  • How to get started – basic equipment, hive placement and getting your bees
  • The basics of bee biology – workers, drones and queens. The social structure and colony life.
  • Hive management – Spring, summer, fall and overwintering.
  • Ohio Apiary Laws,Threats to honeybees – Pests, disease, mites and us.
  • Lessons from the hive – Management mistakes by new beekeepers from the inspector.
  • Introduction to the COBA Bee yard.
  • The final class will include a demonstration of installing bees and inspecting and overwintered hive at a local bee yard on a Saturday in April. TBD based on weather.
